On Tuesday, the Mandela family spokesperson revealed that Zoleka Mandela, the granddaughter of Nelson Mandela, lost her battle with cancer at the age of 43. Zoleka passed away on the evening of Monday, September 25, surrounded by her loved ones.
Zoleka Mandela had been bravely documenting her journey and battle against cancer on her official Instagram account. A post from August 23, reflected her internal struggle, over how to convey the reality of her condition to her children. However, the post has since been deleted from her official account.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation also expressed its deep condolences and sorrow for the family’s loss. Zoleka was described as a beloved grandchild of Winnie and Madiba, and her passing was mourned by the Foundation.
Moreover, Zoleka Mandela was recognized for her unwavering dedication to activism, particularly in the realms of healthcare and justice. She had been a tireless advocate for cancer prevention. In addition, she worked diligently to eradicate the stigma surrounding the disease.
However, her activism extended beyond cancer awareness to cover road safety campaigns. A cause that became deeply personal after the tragic loss of her 13-year-old daughter, Zenani, in a car crash in 2010.
“What do I tell my children? How do I tell them that this time around, I may not get to live my life as a survivor? How do I tell them everything will be okay when it’s not? I’m dying … I don’t want to die.”
