The Registrar of Political Parties, Ann Nderitu, has officially announced the allocation of funds from the Political Parties Fund (PPF) for the financial year 2023/2024. A total of 48 political parties are set to benefit from this funding, with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) emerging as the top recipient, receiving Ksh576.9 million. The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and Jubilee will also secure substantial amounts of Ksh308.2 million and Ksh135.2 million, respectively.
These allocations are part of the PPF’s distribution, which primarily draws its funding from the National Government, constituting 0.3% of the National Revenue. In addition to government contributions, sources may include membership fees, contributions, and donations.
To be eligible for funding, political parties must meet specific criteria outlined in the Political Parties Act 2021. Firstly, a party cannot receive funding if more than two-thirds of its registered office bearers belong to the same gender.
Moreover, the party must have representation from Special Interest Groups within its governing body. Additionally, a political party without an elected Member of the National Assembly, an elected member of the Senate, an elected Governor, or an elected Member of the County Assembly will not receive any funding.

The distribution of the Fund follows a structured approach as defined by the law. Seventy percent of the Fund is allocated proportionally, based on the total number of votes secured by each political party in the preceding general election. An additional 15 percent of the Fund is distributed according to the number of candidates from Special Interest Groups elected in the same election.
The funds allocated to political parties from the PPF are intended to cover the respective party’s election expenses, further emphasizing the significance of these disbursements in the upcoming political landscape. The Registrar of Political Parties has stated that the allocated funds will be distributed quarterly upon receipt from the National Treasury.
