The Rising Popularity of Yoni Pearls

The Yoni Pearl is a product that has been advertised as a vaginal detoxifying agent and Kenyan women are rushing to purchase it.

The product is being marketed mainly by influencers who have a knack for using social media algorithms to their advantage. It has recently become the go-to solution for Kenyan women when it comes to reproductive health issues.

According to its advertisement, it helps women suffering from recurring yeast and bacterial vaginosis infections, infertility and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Influencers post it on all platforms including Instagram and TikTok where they’ve managed to pull most people’s interest.

Most women have now sought after the yoni pearls disregarding any advice given to them by gynaecologists. In most circumstances, when one is suffering from the infections listed, the gynaecologist would prescribe medication in the form of pills or creams.

Yoni Pearls have largely been advertised by the Instagram page, My Happy Vagina. It has over 69,000 followers and claims to sell natural feminine care products, with yoni pearls as its most famous product.

According to the Instagram highlights, yoni pearls contain natural ingredients such as feverfew, angelica and osthol.

A few gynaecologists, however, refuted the idea that yoni pearls detoxify the vagina. Dr John Odero, a gynaecologist, said that there was no scientific backing to the claims being made by the agency.

“The vagina is self-cleaning and does not need external products to be clean or detoxified,” Odero observed.

He said that instead of the pearls being helpful, they would rather cause a pH imbalance and vaginal irritation. This environment could create room for diseases such as vaginosis and vaginal cancer.

Possible Harms Caused by Yoni Pearls

The constant use of these pearls can lead to the death of Lactobacillus acidophilus, a bacteria in the vagina that produces lactic acid. This bacteria prevents the growth of other harmful bacteria. If left in too long, the pearls can cause severe infection, pelvic inflammation disease and toxic shock syndrome if used during periods. While you use them to treat yeast infections, they can cause another severe yeast infection and make you bleed.

Yeast infections and other vagina-related infections happen to most women because the vagina is sensitive. It could be caused by a change of environment, sexual partners, restrooms, tissue papers and so on.

It is advisable to always open up to medical practitioners about your vagina issues, it does not make you less of a woman, and it helps to avoid self-medication and unnecessary insertions.

Reason for Yoni Pearl’s Craze

The reason behind women’s gullibility to such content is the fact that there has been a growing influence of regular detoxification of the vagina. Without sufficient help from medical practitioners, women are willing to do anything to ensure they maintain healthy reproductive systems. For this reason, they are willing to try any product that claims to be natural and detoxify the vagina.

Companies have therefore taken advantage of this growing need and pushed content or products with this same message. They do so using misinformation and disinformation and have no regard for the consequences that might follow.

Medical experts have, therefore, dismissed the misinformation that Yoni Pearls can aid in the detoxification process of the vagina. They rather state that it may lead to prolonged vaginal discharge which could cause vaginal infections or vaginal cancer.
