Countries worldwide are looking to secure cleaner and more sustainable energy sources as environmental concerns intensify and in this pursuit, South Africa has emerged with its ambitious plans to harness the power of green hydrogen.
With the country’s abundant sun, wind, and significant platinum reserves, the nation is positioning itself as a leader in the green energy revolution. South Africa has been steadily expanding its renewable energy portfolio, capitalizing on its ample sunshine and wind resources. Moreover, the country is venturing into the realm of green hydrogen through pioneering pilot projects.
These projects are undertaken in partnership with BRICS partners, a consortium of nations including South Africa, with a focus on fostering greener industrial capabilities across these member countries. One of the major highlights is South Africa’s potential to become a global leader in green hydrogen production. A recent study suggested that green hydrogen could contribute a substantial $8.8 billion USD boost to the country’s GDP by 2050.
This projection is underpinned by the nation’s extensive platinum reserves, a key catalyst in the hydrogen production process. The South African government is actively investing in projects that drive the green hydrogen agenda. Two significant initiatives are currently in progress. The first involves the manufacturing of fuel cell components, which are integral to the development of future engines, particularly for heavy vehicles and stationary applications.

The second initiative focuses on establishing hydrogen fuel stations, with a pilot rollout taking place in the Kang area. Green hydrogen, touted as a CO2-friendly fuel of the future, is derived from a virtually inexhaustible source: water. South Africa’s abundance of sunlight and wind provides a solid foundation for the country’s green hydrogen aspirations.
A core aspect of South Africa’s hydrogen roadmap is centered around skills development and training. By forging synergies and partnerships within Africa and the BRICS nations, the country aims to equip its youth with the expertise needed to thrive in the energy sector. Initiatives such as energy masterclasses are already underway, imparting valuable knowledge to the next generation of energy innovators.
