Woman Dies: Being Struck During a Brawl of Football Fans

A 23- year old woman has died just two days after she was struck in the neck with a beer bottle during a brawl between Palmeiras and Flamengo fans.

Gabriella Anelli, a Palmeiras fan was hit as she attempted to enter the Allianz Parque stadium in Sao Paulo for the Brazilian match on Saturday.

Football club Palmeiras said in their social media ”cannot accept that a 23-year-old woman be a victim of barbarism in a place that should be for entertainment.” The club then urged authorities to investigate the case which is hurting the image of Brazilian soccer.

According to ESPN, police have made an arrest in connection with the incident.

There was an extended level of fan trouble and the police had to use teargas which forced the referee to stop the play on two occasions

Santos FC, a fellow top-flight Brazilian team, sent a message of solidarity, writing on Twitter: “The four clubs with the largest fans in Sao Paulo stand in solidarity with the family of Gabriela Anelli in this moment of immense pain.

Ednaldo Rodrigues, president of the Brazilian Football Confederation, said he was working with authorities “to avoid criminal and sad episodes like this from happening again”

Every game this coming weekend in the Brazilian top-flight will now feature a minute’s silence ahead of kick-off in Anelli’s memory.
