Twitter CEO, Elon Musk has announced that the social media platform will limit the number of tweets that users can interact with in a day depending on their subscription to the platform.
Elon Musk said that the move is meant to discourage the “extreme levels” of system exploitation and data scraping by artificial intelligence. He announced on Friday that Twitter will stop allowing tweet link previews when links are shared with others and would instead require users to log in before viewing tweets. The number of tweets users can read each day will then briefly be capped.

In a tweet, Elon Musk said that verified users, the majority of which are accounts enrolled in his controversial Twitter Blue program, would be allowed to view 6,000 posts per day, while unverified users will only be able to view 600 posts per day. Recently formed unverified accounts will only be allowed a maximum of 300 posts per day.
Once a user has viewed the total allocated amount of tweets, the platform shows the words ‘rate limit exceeded’ and bars the user from viewing any more tweets. Twitter users have been outraged by the decision blaming Elon Musk for reducing the user experience on the platform. In various parts of the world, the hashtag ‘#RIPTwitter’ started trending after Elon’s announcement. Users are saying that they are opting to use other platforms where they are not required to pay in order to access.
The move has been projected to affect the company’s revenue streams in the long run as they are also limiting the number of advertisements that users can see in a day.

Although the move by Twitter to limit tweets for users has been criticised, Elon Musk stands by the decision saying that the decision will curb data scraping by artificial intelligence robots which was also affecting the user experience on the app. The rate limits for users are expected to increase to 8000 tweets for verified users and 800 for unverified users, according to Elon Musk.
