Reasons Why Human Rights are Important

Human rights are inherent, interdependent, indivisible, and universal. They cannot be suspended, nor are they optional. Therefore, they must be upheld by all individuals and institutions in all places and at all times.

Amidst the rising demonstrations in the country, there have been several distressing cases where human rights have been violated.

One such case involves torture and abuse, where instances of police beating individuals even after surrendering have been reported. Additionally, indiscriminate use of tear gas in residential areas and schools has been observed.

These actions represent a clear violation of human rights, as guaranteed by the Constitution of Kenya in Article 25, which explicitly prohibits torture and other cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment.

This includes people living with disabilities, the elderly, women, and children.

Another significant benefit of human rights is that they empower individuals to stand up against societal corruption. By providing a platform for people to voice their experiences of abuse and corruption, human rights promote accountability and positive change.

Moreover, human rights instil a sense of dignity among people, reinforcing the belief that every individual deserves respect and fair treatment, be it from the government or within their work environments.
