With his arrival there were high expectations that he might embrace the prestigious number 1 jersey
Traditionally, the number 1 jersey has been reserved for the first-choice goalkeeper in most football clubs.

At Manchester United, the iconic number 1 jersey has been worn by legendary players like Peter Schmeichel, Edwin van der Sar, and David De Gea.
Onana chose to wear the number 24 shirt instead.
This is a number he has worn most of his senior club career, donning it Ajax and Inter.

The number 24 jersey has been vacant at United since January 2021, when previous incumbent Tim Fosu-Mensah completed his move to Bayer Leverkusen.
It has also been worn by Darren Fletcher for 12 seasons. Fletcher is the current technical director for the Red Devils.
