Clean cooking alternatives are swiftly replacing traditional dirty fuels like charcoal and kerosene in Kenyan households, thanks to KOKO Networks’ bio ethanol ATMs.
For decades, the Kenyan cooking market has been dominated by carbon dioxide-emitting and fume-producing fuels, posing health and environmental hazards, especially for low-income families who cook indoors.
Koko Networks, recognizing the urgent need for a cleaner solution, developed the bio ethanol cooking technology known as KOKO Point. This user-friendly system operates similarly to an ATM, but instead of withdrawing cash, it dispenses clean bio ethanol cooking fuel. Users simply plug in their canisters, select the desired quantity of fuel on the screen, and transfer it to their cookers.

The impact of this clean alternative on people’s lives is profound. For Charity Carranza, a customer who switched from charcoal to bio ethanol, the transformation has been both health-wise and financially beneficial. The new fuel has eliminated harmful fumes, reduced expenses, and improved her overall well-being.

Koko’s innovative solution has also opened up opportunities for local entrepreneurs like Robert Kim, who serves as an agent for the startup. As an agent, Robert interacts with more users to help boost his business and contributes to the clean cooking movement.
Despite the positive impact, challenges persist for Koko Networks and other clean tech startups. The challenges include, high import taxes, particularly a burdensome 35% duty that hinder the effort to lower prices and expand the market for cleaner solutions. For KOKO Networks, the desire to keep prices affordable for consumers limits their ability to invest in further expansion.
In light of these challenges, Koko Networks is looking to advocate for clean solutions at the upcoming Africa Climate Summit in Kenya’s capital, scheduled to open in September. The summit offers a crucial platform to address the need for supportive policies and initiatives that can facilitate the growth of clean technologies in the country.
