Are modern men re-defining men’s fashion trends and masculinity? Since 2019, the rise of men wearing earrings, camisole inspired blouses, skirts(kilts) and long hairs to mention but a few have been part of fashion runways and adopted into streetwear style. The trend that could be termed as Girly menswear.
Generation Z is known to be more gender fluid and sexually fluid and they currently will shape what masculinity will mean. Celebrities like Jaden Smith and Lil Uzi Vert have been seen to wear skirts and feminine blouses.
In 2014, Calvin Klein introduced men’s lace intimate wear but during this time it was not highly embraced. In 2021, pearls were a trend on the runway and the streets. Harry Styles made it mainstream when he was spotted wearing a pearl necklace to embrace his feminine side. Not mention that Harry Styles has been on the spot before for his feminine dressing with journalists who consider it emasculating. In 2022, Van Bierendonck brought out bright coloured heeled men’s footwear.

Men in this era are learning to change their attitudes and values and embracing their more feminine side. These days men are invested more in their appearance. With women empowerment on the rise, gen Z men are adapting and molding their attitudes and behaviours. Currently, both extremes of toxic masculinity and feminine men is where most men vary, with only few men sticking to the traditional masculine traits.
Women nowadays are challenging men in all areas like sports and cooperate spaces and taking dominance forcing some men to adopt to the changes. Society dictates that men are dominant, tough, linear, aggressive while women are soft, tender, nurturing and this is to be seen on their way of dressing.
