The incident which occurred in the early morning hours while parents were dropping off their children at the school, claimed the lives of a teacher, two parents, and three children.

People were outraged when videos purportedly from the attack emerged on Weibo, China’s largest social media platform. In one video, a man passing through the playground of the kindergarten appeared carrying a knife. Multiple victims could be seen bleeding outside of the kindergarten in a different video.

A China-based news outlet, Dafeng News, reported that the incident may have been a retaliation to a car accident that involved the suspect’s child. One of the victims of the stabbing is alleged to have caused the accident which led the suspect to storm the school and kill several people as revenge.

Despite greater security being mandated after about 20 children were slain in 2010, attacks on kindergartens are frequently reported in China and are typically attributed to mental illness. The Chinese government has strictly controlled access to guns, and there have been a number of mass stabbings despite the country’s very low incidence of large-scale violent crimes.
