3 Sports With Little Recognition in Kenya

Today, many sports are popular in Kenya, played both professionally and as recreational physical activities. Globally, Kenya is mainly known for her dominance in middle-distance and long-distance races, Rugby specially the Rugby Sevens and swimming.

Kenya has also been a dominant force in ladies’ volleyball within Africa, with both the clubs and the national team winning various continental championships in the past decade.

Among the sports played in Kenya today include athletics (track & field and other running events), cricket, motor sports, football (soccer), rugby, volleyball, basketball, swimming and diving, handball, netball, rounder, baseball, shooting, softball, cycling, martial arts (boxing, karate, kickboxing, judo, and taekwondo), Lawn Tennis, Table Tennis, Squash, Badminton, Golf, Canoeing, Chess, Goal Ball, Horse Riding/Equestrianism, Polo, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Archery, Roller Sports, and Mountain Sports – Kenya.

One is Roller Sports, that is, Roll ball to be specific. Kenya won the first World Cup in 2015 in Chennai City, India before reclaiming the title four years later in the same city. With the latest game coming in April 2023, when the team thrashed Egypt 5-0 in the final in Pune, India to successfully defend the title.

Roll Ball is a sport that is gaining popularity worldwide and has also found a fan base in Kenya. It also combines elements of basketball, handball, and skating.

The game is played by two opposing teams each of six players on a court. The players move around the court on skates thus making the game a paced one. The goalposts for the game are similar to those in handball.

Additionally, the team does not have a training ground therefore, they train at one of the university’s outdoor grounds.

This poses a great challenge for them because, when they travel abroad for matches, they play indoors.

Another sport is Judo. It is played by throwing an opponent, immobilizing them with a pin, or force the opponent to submit with a joint lock or a choke.

Kenya has been registered for the continental showpieces alongside South Africa, Egypt, Madagascar, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Angola, Botswana, Uganda, Algeria, Guinea, Zambia, and the Comoros Islands.

Last year, Kenya was fortunate to host the African Cadet and Junior Championships at Moi International Stadium, Kasarani, on July.

The third sport is Archery. This sport is played by the archer who lines up at the target and attempts to shoot the arrow as close to the center of the circle.

Kenya is keen to send archers to this year’s African Championship/Paris Olympic Games in Paris.
