Benjamin Mendy: Footballer on Retrial for Sexual Assault

Five months after a jury exonerated him of numerous other charges, Benjamin Mendy was back in a UK courtroom on Monday to stand trial for two new alleged sexual offenses.

The 28-year-old French footballer has denied the new charges against him. Benjamin Mendy’s retrial was scheduled to start at Chester Crown Court yesterday. The football player is accused of raping two women and attempting to rape another.

Judge Steven Everett, Chester’s Honorary Recorder, will preside over the trial. A new jury will be selected in the footballer’s trial, which is anticipated to last two to three weeks.

Back in January, after a five-month trial, Mendy was found not guilty of seven counts of rape and one count of sexual assault that six women had alleged against him. On two alleged sex offenses by two women, however, the jury was unable to return a verdict. The prosecution in Mendy’s case had alleged that he was a sexual predator who organized parties at his home in order to assault young women.

The footballer’s contract with Manchester City will expire at the end of this month. He last participated in a match for the team in August 2021, just before his arrest. Manchester had earlier declined to comment on Mendy’s case saying in a statement that; ‘given the open matters in his case, the club is not in a position to offer further comment’. Since then, the club has put Mendy on administrative leave.
