Usernames on WhatsApp: What Users Actually Want

WhatsApp New Features

According to a report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is exploring the possibility of introducing usernames as a primary means of identification, moving away from its traditional reliance on phone numbers.

This move is seen as a response to the increasing competition from other social media applications, which often allow users to create unique usernames. The most recent platform to add the username feature is YouTube.

Considering the number of users on WhatsApp, it may be hard to get enough usernames for everyone on the platform.

Despite having a feature that allows users to video-call and another that allows them to share their live location in real-time, users say that the live feature would enhance their experience on the platform better.

It remains to be seen how WhatsApp will address the concerns raised by users while implementing usernames. Since the Meta-owned platform has been on a roll to introduce new features, users remain hopeful that they will also get a live feature soon.
