The Registrar of Political Parties acknowledged Sabina Chege and Kanini Kega as the bonafide party leader and secretary-general, respectively, while the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal recognised a different faction.

On Friday, May 19, a letter from the Registrar of Political Parties, Anne Nderitu, acknowledged Kanini Kega’s faction as the legitimate officials of the Jubilee Party. The letter, referencing the Political Parties Act, stated that the party followed due process in expelling Jeremiah Kioni and David Murathe, as well as suspending Kagwe. The national disciplinary committee’s decision on May 10, was cited as the basis for these actions. The registrar also mentioned that the records in her office had been updated accordingly.

“Following a review of the submitted documents in line with the PPA,and the Party Constitution, this office is satisfied that the party adhered to the due process,” said Nderitu.

Three days after the registrar’s decision, the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal issued interim Conservatory orders against the Jubilee party’s National Disciplinary Committee’s decision. The tribunal prohibited the registry of political parties from acting on any communication from the Kanini Kega faction that claimed to expel Kioni and others. This ruling by the PPDT contradicted the registrar’s acknowledgment of Kanini Kega and Sabina Chege’s team as the party officials.

The conflicting positions have deepened the leadership crisis within the Jubilee party. The confusion surrounding the bonafide party leader and secretary-general has created a state of uncertainty and disagreement among party members and observers.

Azimio Leader Raila Odinga has also weighed in on the matter, cautioning President William Ruto about the dire consequences of interfering with the internal affairs of the Azimio la Umoja affiliate party.

The dispute over the legitimate Jubilee Party leader position remains unresolved between retired President Uhuru Kenyatta and Nominated MP Sabina Chege, and it is currently with the Internal Dispute Resolution Committee.
