Following a 10-day investigation that covered three states, Nasir Grant and Ameen Hurst have been apprehended and are now in custody.
The investigation resulted in charges against four more individuals. According to documents obtained by CNN, Hurst, who is 18 years old, placed a phone call three hours before successfully escaping from the Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Center.
“Meet at the bridge behind (the prison),” Hurst told the man on the recorded line.
After the call, they finally escaped.
At approximately 8:30 p.m. on May 7, Hurst and 24-year-old Grant managed to escape from their cells.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, they crawled to the shower area in their cell block and awaited the signal from Jose Flores-Huerta, another inmate who was monitoring the guard tower.
Once given the all-clear, Hurst and Grant exited through an available exit and proceeded through a hole that had been cut in the prison fence. They overcame two additional barbwire barriers and swiftly disappeared into the night.
Despite the majority of the escape being captured on camera, Philadelphia law enforcement authorities reportedly did not become aware of the incident until nearly 19 hours later, as stated in court documents.
“Clearly the system screwed up and people didn’t do what they were supposed to do,” reported a visibly frustrated Mayor Jim Kenney the Monday after the escape.
