Olunga on target as Al Duhail outclass Al Sadd 2-0 to win Qatar Cup

Michael Olunga and Sassi scored as Al Duhail put up a dominant performance to regain the Qatar Cup title outplaying Al Sadd to win the final 2-0 in a packed Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium.

The Kenyan striker now has two trophies this season with the victory keeping Al Duhail, who won the Ooredoo Cup last month, on course for a quadruple this season.

They are also leading the QNB Stars League (QSL) standings and will play the Amir Cup quarter-final against Al Sailiya on Monday. 

Coach Hernan Crespo’s side was the better side against Juan Manuel Lillo’s Wolves, riding on second-half goals to win the tournament for the first time since 2018.

The Red Knights, have failed to lift the trophy against their rival Al Sadd in the previous two finals of the tournament in the 2020 and 2021 editions.

Olunga put them ahead in the 48th minute while Tunisian midfielder Ferjani Sassi sealed victory six minutes later as Al Duhail took sweet revenge.

H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, handed the trophy to Al Duhail captain Al Moeez Ali and honoured the players and officials of the two teams.   

“It’s a great honour to win the Qatar Cup,” Al Moeez said after lifting the trophy.

“We played well throughout the match and we deserved to win. Now we will focus on completing the set of four trophies this season. Our coach [Crespo] has developed the players well using all his experience,” the Qatari striker added.   

The two-goal cushion did not suffice for the Red Knights as they continued to put pressure on their rivals with repeated surges.

Al Duhail won the title in 2018 with a 2-1 win over Al Sadd in the final.

The Red Knights, coached by Hernan Crespo, are in top form having won the Ooredoo Cup trophy – the first title of the season – last month and are leading the QSL standings.

Relishing the final against Al Sadd, Olunga spoke before the game and said Al Duhail were brimming with confidence ahead of the big match.

“The match (Qatar Cup final) will not be easy. We have had a strong morale boost after winning the Ooredoo Cup which also indicates the team’s level,” “We had lost to Al Sadd in the final of the previous editions of the Qatar Cup. This year we hope to be able to compensate and achieve the title.”
