Deep in the mountains of southwest China’s Hunan province, electric engineers are testing the country’s new low-earth orbit satellite network.

They are sending data and images to a control centre hundreds of kilometres away, which are received in real time.

“We could not know in real time how things are progressing if mountain fires break out and power lines are damaged. But with communication terminals connected to LEO satellites, we can easily learn about potential risks near the power lines, which makes work easier and helps make the power supply more reliable”, an electric engineer said.

The overall market value of China’s satellite-related enterprises is expected to reach 6 billion US dollars (Ksh 809 billion) by 2025.

China also recently successfully tested its first high-temperature superconducting electric levitation system, which can eventually be used for high-speed and ultra-high-speed train service and low vacuum pipelines.

The test took place in the northeastern city of Changchun last week and marks several technological breakthroughs for the country, including in the areas of superconducting magnets, linear, synchronous traction, induction, power supply, and low-temperature refrigeration.
