However, Messi’s two-year contract with Paris St-Germain expires this summer and his preference is thought to be staying with the French club.

Barcelona’s vice-president Rafael Yuste on Messi:

“Leo and his family know the affection I have for them,” Yuste said. “I participated in the negotiations which unfortunately did not lead to a certain result. I’ve always had and I have this thorn in my side that Leo couldn’t continue at our club. Messi knows how much we appreciate him. I would love for him to come back. We’re in contact, of course, with them.”

Messi agreed on a new deal with Barcelona on reduced wages two years ago, but it was dependent on the club selling players following new financial rules in La Liga.

Messi’s career at Baca saw him yield four Champions Leagues, 10 La Liga titles, and six Ballons d’Or.

Messi sits third in the all-time list, behind great rival Cristiano Ronaldo (122) of Portugal and Iran’s Ali Daei (109).
