Argentina tops FIFA world ranking after a six-year gap as Brazil drop

World champions Argentina dethroned Brazil and returned to the top of the FIFA rankings on Thursday after a six-year gap.

Argentina won last year’s World Cup in Qatar by beating France in the final with runners-up France up to second in the FIFA rankings.

Lionel Scaloni’s side grabbed the No. 1 spot after a comfortable win over Panama 2-0 and Curacao 7-0 in friendlies with Lionel Messi netting in both friendlies.

France moved up one place to second after a 4-0 win over the Netherlands and a 1-0 victory in Ireland in Euro 2024 qualifiers, while Brazil slipped to third after losing 2-1 away to Morocco in a friendly.

Belgium remained fourth, England was fifth followed by the Netherlands in sixth, Croatia seventh and Italy eighth. Portugal and Spain completed the top 10.

The United States was still No. 13, two ahead of regional rival Mexico. Canada, the other North American co-host of the 2026 World Cup, rose six to No. 47.

Japan at No. 20 was the best of the Asian teams, and the 2022 World Cup host Qatar fell to No. 61.

The Central African Republic were the biggest mover in the latest rankings, jumping 10 places to 122nd as they aim to reach the African Cup of Nations for the first time.

Cameroon had the biggest drop, falling nine places to 42nd.
