No More Freebies! Netflix Plans to End Free Password Sharing

Netflix

The well-renowned streaming platform Netflix plans to prevent password and open account sharing among family and friends, and restrict it to one password for those living in the same household, forbidding people who do not live under the same roof to share passwords and accounts.

This strategy is being used to increase the number of paying users and subscribers on Netflix. The streaming service will start rolling out the paid sharing feature in the first quarter of 2023- starting in April 2023.

There will be a new set of terms and conditions for people who plan to share an account and password. The new member will be required to pay up if they wish to use Netflix outside their household.

The new paid-shared model will work by associating the Wi-Fi network with the users’ primary residence and all other devices connected to it, able to use Netflix.

“A primary location is set by a TV that is signed into your account and is connected to your Wi-Fi network. All other devices signed into your account on that Wi-Fi network will be associated with your primary location and will be able to use Netflix,” Reads the terms and conditions.

If the user does not set a primary location the app will automatically set a location using Device IDs, IP addresses, and device activity. Thereafter people who would like to use Netflix away from home on their own devices should launch the Netflix app on their various devices at least once every 31 days at home.

“To ensure that your devices are associated with your primary location, connect to the Wi-Fi at your primary location, open the Netflix app or website, and watch something at least once every 31 days,” Netflix says.

Aside from Netflix, other Over The Top (OTT) services like HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, and Hulu each have their own methods for preventing — or allowing — users to share their accounts.
