The winners of the 95th Academy Awards will be announced live on ABC on March 12, with host Jimmy Kimmel.

Several previous Oscar winners, including Brad Pitt, Viola Davis, Tom Hanks, and others, were left off the list amid the surprise nominations, such as Andrea Riseborough for To Leslie.

With 11 nominations, Everything Everywhere All At Once from directors The Daniels— Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert — leads the pack.

Voting for Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences members will begin on March 2 and continue until March 7.

As the big night approaches on March 12, here are the exclusions and surprises among the 2023 Academy Award nominees:

Surprise nominees
To Leslie, Andrea Riseborough

A last-minute bid from her A-list peers has landed Riseborough her first Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her work in ‘To Leslie’.

Everything Everywhere at Once, Stephanie Hsu

While no surprise to anyone who has seen EEAAO, Hsu has been conspicuously absent from most award shows this season—but that is no longer the case with her Best Supporting Actress nomination.

Charlotte Wells’ drama proved to be a star vehicle for Mescal, who received his first Best Actor nomination.

The Sea Beast

The Netflix film is up against Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and Turning Red for Best Animated Feature Film.

Shocking Exclusions
The Woman King, Viola Davis/Lashana Lynch

The Woman King, Viola Davis

Davis received several nominations for her role in The Woman King this awards season, but she and co-star Lynch were both snubbed from the 2023 Oscars, as was the film itself.

Where the Crawdads Sing, Taylor Swift

Swift’s “Carolina” may have won Critics’ Choice, Golden Globes, and Hollywood Music in Media Awards this year, but she is not nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars.

Elvis Presley, Tom Hanks

While co-star Austin Butler, who played Elvis Presley, received a nomination, Hanks was not nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Colonel Tom Parker.
