Jurgen Klopp could face Extended Ban after Man City Red Card

Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp and referee

Jurgen Klopp will only face an extended touchline ban if his actions during Liverpool’s thrilling victory over Manchester City are deemed violent.

Because of his irate response to referee Anthony Taylor’s refusal to grant a free kick for what appeared to be a clear foul on Mohamed Salah by Bernardo Silva in the second half, the manager was dismissed from the game.

In a fit of rage, Klopp erupted at the assistant referee and looked to direct some harsh remarks directly at the official.

In response, Anthony Taylor gave Klopp a straight red card, and he was followed by a security guard down the tunnel and into the Anfield dressing room.

At the final whistle, the manager returned to shake hands with Man City officials and players, congratulate his own team, and soak in the atmosphere of a still-rocking Anfield after a highly charged and thrilling match.

Kloop later admitted he “deserved” to be sent off, but he was still angry that his team was not awarded a free kick.

A one-match touchline ban is the standard punishment for a straight red card in a Premier League match. This means Klopp will miss Liverpool’s next game against West Ham on Wednesday, also at Anfield. If Klopp’s reaction is deemed to be violent, the touchline ban can be extended to three or, in extreme cases, four games.

Given that he did not touch the linesman, it would be surprising if Kloop received a longer suspension than one match, even if the possibility of a longer suspension exists.

If Klopp receives a one-game suspension, he will be available for Liverpool’s lunchtime match against Nottingham Forest next Saturday.
