At least 30 people dead after heavy rain in the Philippines

Manila, Philippines; Thousands have been evacuated following the deadly Tropical Storm Nalgae which caused heavy rain and resulted in flooding on October 28, 2022, in the Philippines.

Philippines rescue workers simply evacuated people from a flooded area due to the incident brought by Tropical Storm Nalgae in the areas of Parang and Maguindanao respectively.

“On a high note, Landslides and flooding have killed more than thirty-one (31) people and nine others remain missing as heavy rain from the approaching Tropical Storm Nalgae vends the southern Philippines”, a disaster official said in a statement.

On high alert, the Torrential rainstorms showcased flash flooding overnight which carried away rocks, uprooted trees, and mud into rural communities around Cotabato, a city of 300,000 people on Mindanao island.

“Giving viewpoint, residents in the affected areas were surprised by the rapidly rising floodwaters’’, civil defence chief for the regional government-Naguib Sinarimbo, said on Friday.

In a statement, Naguib Sinarimbo who is the civil defence chief for the regional government said that rainwater increased at the largest percentage, hence causing landslides.

“The houses were full of water before dawn and this brought fear among people,” Sinarimbo stated, confirming that the death toll in the storm-hit areas had jumped to 31 from the earlier tally of 13.

In a rescuing process, rescuers retrieved 16 bodies from the flood-hit town of Datu Odin Sinsuat, 10 from Datu Blah Sinsuat, and five from Upi town, he told the Media.

Showing solidarity, rescuers in rubber boats were searching for the flooded areas around Cotabato whereby the emergency teams, including military units, were checking for other areas where flooding and landslides had been reported.

“The Country’s military has deployed trucks to collect stranded residents in Cotabato and eight nearby towns’’, Nasrullah Imam a provincial civil defense chief said.

The government’s weather office in Manila said that the rain storms were simply related to Tropical Storm Nalgae, which is headed towards the northern Philippines, and the civil defence office said about 5,000 people have been evacuated from flood and landslide-prone areas ahead of Nalgae’s expected landfall on Saturday or Sunday.
