On a stirring afternoon at Anfield, Liverpool sealed their second Premier League title – and their 20th English top-flight crown – with a commanding 5–1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
The win not only confirmed their place at the summit with four matches to spare but also placed them level with Manchester United for the most English championships in history. For head coach Arne Slot, it was a dream debut season.
“This team has an unbelievable mentality,” Slot said after the final whistle, as thousands of Liverpool fans poured onto the streets in celebration. “Even when we went behind, there was a feeling – from the fans, from the players – that we would find a way.”
Sunday’s match saw Liverpool overcome an early setback when Spurs forward Dominic Solanke struck in the 12th minute. But from there, it was one-way traffic. Goals from Luis Díaz, Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah and Darwin Núñez sent Anfield into raptures.
For Salah, who has been at the heart of Liverpool’s charge, the triumph tasted sweeter than the club’s pandemic-era title win in 2020.
“This is 100 per cent better than last time,” Salah told Sky Sports, clutching a phone full of celebratory selfies with fans. “To do it with them here, to show that we can still achieve this with a new team – it’s something special.”
A Long-Awaited Celebration
Liverpool’s only previous Premier League title came under Jürgen Klopp in 2019–20, during the bleak, fanless months of the pandemic. This time, the trophy will be lifted before a full house, with the roar of Anfield ringing in players’ ears.
The anticipation was evident hours before kick-off, with thousands lining Anfield Road to greet the team bus in a sea of red. Flags waved, flares burned, and songs echoed down Merseyside streets.
It was a moment the city had long awaited – a proper coronation.
Historic Milestone
Liverpool’s latest triumph sees them draw level with Manchester United, who have 20 top-flight titles but have not won the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013.
The current rankings of most English top-flight titles now stand:
- Manchester United – 20
- Liverpool – 20
- Arsenal – 13
- Manchester City – 10
- Everton – 9
It is a remarkable achievement for Slot, who succeeded Klopp last summer amid a significant transition at the club. Many wondered if Liverpool’s best days were behind them. Slot’s answer has been emphatic.
Salah’s Starring Role
Central to Liverpool’s success has been Mohamed Salah, enjoying one of the finest seasons of his career.
The Egyptian forward tops the Premier League charts with 28 goals and 18 assists, meaning he has contributed directly to 58% of Liverpool’s league goals this season.
Salah now stands on the brink of further history. Should he reach 20 assists, he would join Thierry Henry as only the second player to record 20 goals and 20 assists in a Premier League season.
“Goal involvements, for sure… hopefully I’m going to break it soon,” Salah said, half-joking about his calculations. “I know I broke the 38-game record. Now, I think there is one goal or one assist to go. I counted!”
Only Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole have ever posted more goal involvements in a single campaign, both reaching 47 during the mid-1990s.
The current top scorers and assist-makers this season highlight Salah’s dominance:
Most Goals | Most Assists |
---|---|
Mohamed Salah – 28 | Mohamed Salah – 18 |
Erling Haaland – 21 | Jacob Murphy – 11 |
Alexander Isak – 21 | Mikkel Damsgaard – 10 |
Looking Ahead
With four matches left, Liverpool could yet set new points or goals records. But for now, Anfield is savouring the moment.
As the sun set over Merseyside on Sunday, the chants of “We are the champions” rang louder than ever. Liverpool, once again, are the kings of England.
