A person’s mental state can be attributed to many things, including the ideas and perceptions we have of ourselves which translate into complexes.
Complexes are a group or system of related ideas or impulses that have a typical emotional tone and exert a strong unconscious influence on the individual’s attitudes and behavior.
There are many complexes that most of us are not even aware of. They include:
- Martyr complex/victim complex:
People with martyr complexes strive to get attention and sympathy through suffering. They put everyone above themselves to the extent that they ignore their needs. They may even do self-harm if they do not get the attention they want.

- Napoleon complex“,
It is also called small man syndrome. It is a syndrome attributed to short people. It is characterized by overly-aggressive or domineering social behavior, such as lying about earnings or walking with huge phones to compensate for their shortcomings. (pun intended. I choose violence)
- Hero Complex
People with a hero complex believe they are heroes, destined to save the day. Kind of like superman. It reminds me of these girls who like to date bad boys and think that they can change them. Sure Jennifer, or should I say, Wonder Woman?
- Inferiority complex
People with this type of complex perceive themselves as worthless or less capable. So many people out here have this type of complex without them being aware. Inevitably, they can deliberately let the good stuff pass them by just because they think they don’t deserve anything good.

- Superiority complex
Unlike people with an inferiority complex, people with this type of complex think of themselves extravagantly. They think they are better than others and are more deserving of everything than the rest of the world. (an intense kind of entitlement if you ask me)
- Guilt complex
People suffering from guilt complex blame themselves for everything. Like in the movies, there is always a character who spends ¾ of their time wallowing in guilt, blaming themselves for the death of a parent or partner. It is a sad place to be in I think.

- God complex
These people, take themselves to be divine. Please respect the ground they walk on. Worship them and lick their feet.
Complexes are not black and white; they are not as easily understandable as we’d like to think. We should understand why people are the way they are and at least try to seek help if it gets overwhelming for ourselves and the people around us.
