The National Security Advisory Council (NSAC) led by Head of Civil Service and Chairperson of the NSAC Joseph Kinyua has turned down grave allegations stated by the Chairman of IEBC Chebukati.
In an affidavit filed by Electoral body chairman Chebukati, he claimed the NSAC was at the Bomas of Kenya on 15th August which is the presidential elections announcement date trying to have him announce Raila Odinga as the winner or a run-off.
Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati, Prof Abdi Guliye exposed the NSAC team of Principal Administrative Secretary in the Office of President Kennedy Kihara, Solicitor General Kennedy Ogeto, Police boss Hillary Mutyambai and Lieutenant General Francis Ogolla to Bomas.
Emphasizing that the team was sent to deliver a message which said that a result against Mr. Odinga would plunge the country into chaos.
However, Mr. Kihara has insisted that the NSAC team went to Bomas in relation to security matters that had become a concern since the delays in transmission of results for the presidential-elect had led to a rising tension.
“The said meeting was necessitated by the fact that the NSAC, in the discharge of its mandate, had become seized of information to the effect that delays in declaring the results of the Presidential election, and the manner in which the results were being transmitted, including the stoppage of the public display of results, had generated considerable public anxiety and tension, and risked creating opportunity for chaos in parts of the country,” Mr. Kihara says in his affidavit.
This he points out was a necessity since Mr. Chebukati had snubbed the requests by the NSAC for a meeting earlier on.
“As the leader and spokesperson of the above-named delegation, I did not at any time urge or implore the IEBC and Mr. Chebukati to declare results in favor of any particular candidate in the Presidential election. Our presentation to the IEBC and Mr. Chebukati, on behalf of the NSAC, concerned the need to expedite the process of declaring the result and ensuring transparency in order to avert public anxiety and suspicions that were gradually beginning to degenerate into chaos and violence in various parts of the country,” Mr. Kihara added.
In his defense terming the NSAC team as one without any political side inclination evident was the assuring of the people that Kenya is safe after the declaration by the IEBC chair of President-elect William Ruto.
