The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has set the dates for the conduction of the elections that have had a bit of a challenge hence postponed till a later date.
Wafula Chebukati speaking urged the citizens to stay intact maintaining peace as the process of voting went to a close allowing for the tallying process to continue as the numbers come in and even those in zones that have been postponed to stay calm as scheduled.
“It will be cost-effective since the same equipment and personnel will be deployed with minimum training,” Chebukati said.
The voting process faced challenges in some of the counties like Mombasa and Kakamega counties that have had their gubernatorial races set at a later date of August 23 as stated by the court.
Chebukati emphasized the outcome of the date was set in compliance with an issued court order of conduction in at least a fortnight. Cancellation of the gubernatorial polls due to mismatching information on the printed ballot papers while in Rongai there was a mix-up in the MP ballot papers with those of Kuresoi South.
By-elections have also been scheduled in areas that include Kitui Rural, Kacheliba, Rongai, and Pokot South constituencies and, Nyaki Wet and Kwa Njenga wards.
The suspension of elections in Eldas Constituency is pegged on insecurity issues that will see the voting conducted on Wednesday, August 10.
This was after an attack on the tallying centre in Wajir on Monday, August 8, by unknown gunmen.
Whether this postponement will have an impact on derailing the timely outcome is a question largely asked that the commissioner of IEBC Francis Wanderi clarify as he called for calmness and staying updated.
“It will not affect our timelines in terms of our presidential announcement. If it is done by the end of the day, they will be able to tally and transmit results. The original copies will be airlifted to Bomas for the national tally,” he added.
