The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has raised concern over a series of attacks and killings involving members of Kenya’s National Police Service, warning that the deaths could undermine public safety and confidence in policing.
In a statement on Wednesday, September 23, IPOA said several officers had lost their lives while carrying out their duties in different parts of the country this month.
The authority said the deaths were particularly distressing because the officers were serving to maintain public order and protect communities.
IPOA extended its condolences to the families of the officers who died in September.
The latest concern follows separate incidents involving police officers in parts of the country, including Isiolo and Kiambu counties. Reports indicate that some officers were killed in attacks while others were injured.
IPOA called for stronger policing strategies to help officers respond to emerging security threats. It said decisions on policing should be guided by evidence, practical experience and established good practice.
The authority also stressed the importance of cooperation between police officers and members of the public.
“We strive to promote public understanding and good relationships by building confidence between the police and citizens,” IPOA said.
The authority said public trust remains an important part of effective policing. It added that it would continue working with both citizens and police officers to improve public safety.
IPOA also reaffirmed its role as an independent civilian oversight body responsible for promoting accountability and professionalism within the National Police Service.
“As an independent and impartial Authority, IPOA reiterates its commitment to building trust and promoting professionalism, accountability, discipline, transparency, and respect for human rights within the National Police Service,” the authority said.
The statement comes as security agencies face renewed scrutiny over how officers are deployed and protected while responding to threats across the country.
IPOA’s mandate includes monitoring police operations and investigating deaths and serious injuries resulting from police action, while also overseeing complaints and matters involving police conduct.
The authority said continued cooperation between the police and communities would be necessary to improve safety while maintaining public confidence in law enforcement.
