Lionel Messi has retired from Argentina duty at 39 after a historic career marked by World Cup glory, Copa América titles and 125 international goals.

Lionel Messi has ended his Argentina career. The 39-year-old made the decision after the 2026 World Cup final. His international journey ends with 207 caps. He also leaves as Argentina’s top scorer. His total stands at 125 goals.

A Painful Goodbye

Lionel Messi reflects on his emotional decision to end his Argentina career after the 2026 World Cup final.

Messi said the decision had not been easy. He said the end had “hurt” him deeply.

“I’ve given it my all,” Messi said. “I have nothing left to give.”

He also praised Argentina’s younger players. He said they now deserved their opportunity. Messi’s decision was shaped by two painful events. Argentina lost the World Cup final to Spain. His father, Jorge Messi, later died in August.

The forward said he had written his farewell message on July 21. That was two days after the final defeat.

“Today, after what happened with my dad, I’m even more convinced than before,” he wrote.

A Historic Argentina Career

Messi first played for Argentina in 2005. His debut came against Hungary in Budapest. It was a difficult start. He was sent off less than a minute after entering the match. What followed was a remarkable international career. Messi helped Argentina win the 2022 World Cup.

Two Copa América titles were also won. The first came in 2021. The second followed in 2024. His final World Cup was also highly productive. Eight goals were scored in the tournament. Four assists were also recorded. His World Cup assist total reached 12.

Messi had retired from international football before. That came after Argentina lost the 2016 Copa América final. He later reversed that decision. His return brought more success.

The 2022 World Cup became the defining moment. Argentina defeated France in a dramatic final in Qatar. Four years later, another final ended differently. Spain secured a 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina.

Messi was left in tears after the defeat. It proved to be his final match for the national team.

Club Football Continues

Messi’s playing career is not over. He remains with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer. His contract runs through the 2028 season. He is therefore expected to continue at club level.

His future beyond that remains uncertain. For now, Miami supporters will continue to watch one of football’s greatest players.

For Argentina, though, the Messi era has ended. His record of 207 appearances and 125 goals now stands as his lasting international mark.
