Newcastle United have turned to one of Europe’s rising young coaches, appointing Matthias Jaissle as their new head coach following the departure of Eddie Howe.
The Premier League club confirmed the appointment on Wednesday, handing the 38-year-old German the task of rebuilding a side that has undergone significant changes after a disappointing campaign.
Jaissle arrives at St James’ Park after a successful spell with Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli, where he guided the team to consecutive AFC Champions League titles in 2025 and 2026. While he has yet to manage in one of Europe’s top domestic leagues, Newcastle’s hierarchy believe his record and coaching philosophy make him the right choice to lead the club’s next chapter.
“It is an incredible honour to become head coach of Newcastle United,” Jaissle said after his appointment.
“This is one of the biggest clubs in European football, with a unique history, identity and supporter base, and I am excited to experience that passion and connection first-hand.”
He added: “When Newcastle United comes your way, you take notice. The ambition of the club, the vision for the future and the opportunity ahead made this an incredibly compelling place to be. I have followed the club’s journey closely in recent years and the progress that has been made is clear for everyone to see.”
Jaissle’s journey to the Premier League has been unconventional. A former Germany Under-21 international, his playing career ended prematurely at 25 because of injury. He moved into coaching, first making his mark with Austrian side Liefering before taking charge of Red Bull Salzburg in 2021.
During his time in Austria, he led Salzburg to back-to-back league titles and an Austrian Cup triumph, establishing himself as one of Europe’s promising young managers. His move to Al-Ahli in 2023 further strengthened his reputation, with continental success in Asia bringing him to the attention of Newcastle’s owners.
The club’s majority shareholder, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, also has strong links to Al-Ahli after acquiring a controlling interest in the Saudi club in 2023.
Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson said the appointment followed an extensive recruitment process.
“Matthias is one of the most exciting and highly regarded young coaches in football and I’m thrilled to welcome him to Newcastle United,” Hopkinson said.
“We have conducted a thorough process, and he has emerged as the clear candidate for the role. He possesses all the qualities we were looking for.”
Jaissle replaces Howe, whose five-year tenure reshaped Newcastle’s fortunes after he took over in November 2021. Under the former Bournemouth manager, the club secured Champions League qualification twice and ended a 56-year wait for major silverware by lifting the League Cup in 2025.
However, last season proved far more difficult. Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League after losing 17 league matches and exited the Champions League in the last 16 following a heavy aggregate defeat to Barcelona.
The club has also seen several high-profile departures during the current transfer window, including Sandro Tonali’s move to Tottenham and Anthony Gordon’s switch to Barcelona. Reports have also linked captain Bruno Guimarães with a move to Arsenal, leaving Jaissle with the challenge of rebuilding a squad that has lost several influential players.
Despite the scale of the task, the new manager struck an optimistic tone.
“I am incredibly excited about the future,” he said.
“I fully and unreservedly believe in this project, the ambition and the direction the club is taking. There is a clear vision, strong leadership and an exceptional platform to build on.”
Jaissle will begin his Premier League journey when Newcastle host defending champions Liverpool in their opening match of the 2026–27 season on August 23, with supporters eager to see whether the German coach can guide the club back into contention at the top of English football.
