The Linda Mwananchi movement has received a fresh opportunity in its bid to secure official recognition after the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties agreed to reconsider an earlier decision rejecting its proposed name.

The development follows a request for review by the movement’s promoters, who argued that the initial decision should be revisited. While the Registrar has not yet approved the name, the move reopens the process and offers the group another chance to present its case.

The dispute over the name has been simmering for months.

Earlier this year, an application to reserve “Linda Mwananchi Party of Kenya” was rejected by the Registrar. The office said the proposed name closely resembled an already reserved political slogan and raised concerns under the Political Parties Act, making it unsuitable for reservation at the time.

The proposed party name also sparked objections from politicians associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and several allies. Through their lawyers, they argued they had neither authorised nor supported the registration of a political party under that name, warning that it could mislead the public and create confusion over the movement’s identity.

The latest decision does not amount to approval. Instead, it means the Registrar will reconsider the application before making a fresh determination in line with the law. The outcome could shape the future of the movement’s political identity as the country edges closer to the 2027 General Election.

Under Kenya’s Political Parties Act, groups seeking registration must first reserve a name before meeting further legal requirements for provisional and, eventually, full registration. The Registrar has the power to reject names that are misleading, too similar to existing political identities or otherwise inconsistent with the law.

For now, the reconsideration keeps the application alive but leaves the final decision firmly in the hands of the Registrar.
