Kenya’s first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games was won in commanding fashion. A historic clean sweep was produced in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase. Edmund Serem crossed the line first in 8:18.23.
Simon Koech followed to claim silver. Leonard Bett completed the podium with bronze. The result lifted Team Kenya’s medal tally after another successful day on the track.
Historic Podium
Kenya’s dominance was once again displayed. All three medals were secured by Kenyan athletes. The victory was achieved by Serem in his first Commonwealth Games.
The reigning World Under-20 champion held off a strong field before pulling clear in the closing stages. World champion Geordie Beamish of New Zealand was among the athletes beaten.
Dream Was Fulfilled
The achievement was described by Serem as a dream come true.
“I’ve won my first title in my first Commonwealth Games, and I’m very happy,” he said. “I know my family is happy back at home and 50 million people out there in Kenya are all happy.”
He also celebrated the all-Kenyan podium.
“Today, I’ve had like 20 calls from my father,” Serem added.
Victory Was Earned
The race was not expected to be easy. Serem admitted the competition had been tough.
“I was not sure,” he said. “The field was very strong.”
He pointed to world champion Geordie Beamish and teammate Simon Koech as major rivals.
“I saw I had the extra energy on the last lap and decided to push,” he said.
Kenyan Legacy Grows
Kenya’s rich history in the steeplechase was strengthened once again. The event has long been dominated by Kenyan champions. Names such as Ezekiel Kemboi, Conseslus Kipruto, Brimin Kipruto and Saif Saaeed Shaheen have shaped that legacy.
Another chapter was added in Glasgow. Serem’s victory confirmed his rapid rise after his World Under-20 triumph.
More medal hopes are now carried by Team Kenya as the athletics programme continues.
