Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has urged residents of Siaya County to reject leaders who have failed to deliver development, arguing that the region cannot afford what he described as “trial-and-error” politics.
Speaking on Saturday during the funeral of Mzee Esau Oyiro Ogeya at Karapul, on the outskirts of Siaya town, Wandayi said the county’s future depends on electing leaders who can translate political promises into tangible progress.
“Politics is the foundation for development, and we cannot afford the trial-and-error games,” Wandayi told mourners. He added that he would campaign for the removal of leaders he believes have failed to meet the expectations of the electorate in the next General Election.
His remarks come as political activity begins to gather pace ahead of the 2027 polls, with leaders increasingly positioning themselves around issues of service delivery and development.
Wandayi also outlined projects the national government says are planned for Siaya County. He said Sh2.2 billion has been allocated for rural electrification, with more than 25 villages expected to benefit from expanded electricity access.
He appealed to residents to support the broad-based government led by President William Ruto, saying several stalled infrastructure projects had been revived.
“We had roads that had stagnated for years, and now they are being tarmacked,” he said. “We also had the county referral hospital in bad condition, and now it is being refurbished and expanded to Level Five status by the national government.”
The Cabinet Secretary presented the projects as evidence of the government’s commitment to improving public services in the county, particularly in infrastructure, healthcare and energy.
While Wandayi credited the national administration for accelerating development, assessments of government performance ultimately remain a matter for voters, who will decide whether elected leaders have delivered on their promises when they return to the ballot.
