The 2026 FIFA World Cup enters its decisive phase on Thursday as France and Morocco meet in a highly anticipated quarter-final that opens the race for a place in the last four.

With 96 matches played and the tournament narrowed from 48 teams to just eight, the competition is now entering its defining moments. The winner of the clash at Gillette Stadium near Boston will move one step closer to lifting football’s biggest prize on 19 July in East Rutherford.

The fixture also revives memories of the 2022 World Cup semi-final, where France ended Morocco’s historic run. This time, however, Morocco arrive as African champions and with a squad that has continued to impress under head coach Mohamed Ouahbi.

France have been among the standout teams of the tournament. Yet Thursday’s match carries added significance as it is expected to be Didier Deschamps’ final campaign in charge after announcing he will step down once the tournament ends.

Despite the attention surrounding his departure, Deschamps insisted his focus remains solely on the task ahead.

“I am not thinking about that at all,” he said. “With my staff, the objective is simply to do everything we can so that things go well. I am focused on this Morocco team.”

The France manager also brushed aside concerns over the appointment of Argentinian referee Facundo Tello, despite online debate fuelled by the possibility of France meeting Argentina later in the tournament.

“There are always decisions that can lead to debate depending on which side you are on,” Deschamps said. “But our opponents are Morocco. I can’t consider the referee to be an opponent.”

Deschamps warned against underestimating Morocco, describing the North Africans as one of the tournament’s strongest sides.

“They are a very, very good team with excellent players. They aren’t here by accident,” he said. “It’s going to be a clash between two teams that like to have possession, attack and score goals.”

The winner will face either European champions Spain or Belgium, who meet on Friday in Los Angeles. Spain have yet to concede a goal at the tournament, while Belgium arrive full of confidence after a commanding victory over the United States in the round of 16.

On the other side of the draw, defending champions Argentina continue their title defence against Switzerland in Kansas City.

Lionel Messi inspired a dramatic comeback in the previous round after Argentina overturned a two-goal deficit to beat Egypt 3-2. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner admitted the team had refused to accept elimination.

“We didn’t want today to be the end. We didn’t want to go home,” Messi said.

Argentina’s opponents in the semi-finals will come from the winner of England and Norway’s quarter-final in Miami. England reached the last eight after an entertaining victory over co-hosts Mexico, while Norway will once again look to Erling Haaland, whose goals have powered their impressive campaign.

With football’s biggest prize now within touching distance, every match from here carries enormous weight, promising four quarter-finals featuring some of the world’s strongest teams and biggest stars.
