The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has unveiled proposed amendments to its party constitution and is inviting members to help shape the party’s future by submitting their views.
In a public notice issued under Section 20(2) of the Political Parties Act, 2011, UDA Secretary-General Hassan Omar said the draft amendments have been published on the party’s official website for members to review.
“A copy of the amended constitution is available at the official Party website. Any member with written submissions concerning the amendment to the constitution is invited to make their written submissions to the party using its official email,” Omar said.
The party did not disclose the specific changes proposed in the notice but encouraged members to send their feedback through its official email before the review process concludes.
The move comes as political parties begin reviewing their internal rules and governance structures ahead of Kenya’s next General Election, expected in 2027. Such reviews are common as parties seek to strengthen internal processes, clarify leadership structures and align their constitutions with legal requirements.
On its website, UDA says it is guided by principles including good governance, accountability, transparency, equity, diversity, justice and peace.
“The leadership of the party shall ensure a just and prosperous nation through good governance, nurturing the right political atmosphere for businesses and industries to thrive, developing human resources, fostering political stability and welfare of the people of Kenya,” the party states.
UDA, Kenya’s ruling party, is led by President William Ruto and forms the backbone of the Kenya Kwanza coalition. Its wheelbarrow symbol and the slogan Kazi ni Kazi have become closely associated with its political identity, reflecting the party’s emphasis on the dignity of work.
The party traces its roots to the Party of Development and Reforms (PDR), before rebranding as the United Democratic Alliance in December 2020. It later sponsored President Ruto’s successful presidential campaign in the 2022 General Election after his departure from the Jubilee Party.
Following the 2022 polls, UDA secured the largest share of seats in both the National Assembly and the Senate, cementing its position as the country’s dominant governing party.
The proposed constitutional amendments now open the door for members to participate in shaping the party’s internal framework as it prepares for the next electoral cycle.
