A quiet residential address in Nairobi became the focus of a high-stakes anti-corruption operation on Thursday, after investigators said they uncovered Sh65 million in cash inside the home of a county official.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) described the raid as part of an ongoing inquiry into suspected economic crimes, raising fresh questions about public accountability in Kenya’s capital.
Officials said the search yielded not only stacks of cash but also documents and materials they believe could shed light on a wider pattern of alleged misconduct.
“The Commission is investigating allegations of conflict of interest, abuse of office, bribery, and possession of unexplained assets,” the agency said in a statement.
At the centre of the investigation is a Nairobi City County official whose identity has not been made public. According to the EACC, financial records under review suggest the individual may have received more than Sh170 million through what investigators describe as suspicious cash transactions and M-Pesa deposits over a six-year period, spanning the 2019/2020 to 2025/2026 financial years.
The agency argues that the scale of the funds appears inconsistent with the official’s known sources of income.
In Kenya, such discrepancies can form the basis for charges related to unexplained wealth, a legal threshold that allows authorities to pursue asset recovery even where direct evidence of corruption is still being established.
“Findings will inform appropriate action, including the recovery of unexplained wealth and proceeds of corruption,” the statement added.
The raid is the latest in a series of enforcement actions by the commission, which has in recent years stepped up efforts to pursue high-level corruption cases. Still, critics often question whether such operations translate into sustained convictions.
