A U.S. citizen who contracted Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been flown to Germany for specialized medical treatment as authorities battle a deadly outbreak that has already claimed more than 130 lives.
The patient was identified by the Serge Christian mission organization as medical missionary Peter Stafford.
According to Reuters, German authorities confirmed preparations were underway to admit the American citizen to a high-security isolation unit in Berlin.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed on Tuesday that the infected individual was being transported to Germany for treatment following coordination between U.S. and German health officials.
Germany’s Health Ministry said the patient would be treated at the special isolation ward at Berlin’s renowned Charite University Hospital, one of Europe’s leading centers for infectious disease management.
“Arrangements are currently being made to admit and treat the patient in Germany,” a ministry spokesperson stated.
The outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo involves a rare strain of the Ebola virus, intensifying concerns among international health agencies.
The outbreak has already killed more than 130 people, prompting increased surveillance and emergency response measures in affected regions.
Meanwhile, health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo continue efforts to contain the outbreak.
