Controversial lawyer and political commentator Miguna Miguna has ignited fresh political debate after declaring that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is not the personal or family property of deceased veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga.
In a strongly worded statement, Miguna argued that ODM, like all political parties in Kenya, is a public institution funded through taxpayer money via the Political Parties Fund as well as contributions from party members.
According to Miguna, no member of Raila Odinga’s family, including his widow, siblings, children, or adopted children, should enjoy special privileges, authority, or influence over the affairs of the party.
Miguna emphasized that ODM operates under Kenya’s democratic and legal framework and therefore cannot be treated as private property belonging to an individual or family dynasty.
He stated that political parties in Kenya are sustained using public resources and are accountable to party members and citizens, not family structures.
“ODM was NOT Raila Odinga’s private property,” Miguna asserted, adding that attempts to elevate family members into positions of influence based solely on their relationship to the veteran politician undermine democratic ideals within political parties.
Miguna’s Criticism of Dynastic Politics in Kenya
The outspoken lawyer further accused those advocating for special consideration for members of Raila Odinga’s family of attempting to personalize public institutions.
Miguna said such arguments reflect “nightmares of the one-party era,” suggesting that Kenya should move away from personality cult politics and embrace institutional democracy.
The remarks come amid ongoing discussions within Kenyan political circles about succession planning, party leadership, and the future direction of ODM after decades under Raila Odinga’s influence.
