Former Chief Justice David Maraga has unveiled the leadership team that will steer his campaign for the 2027 presidential election, signalling an early effort to strengthen his bid under the United Green Movement.
In a statement released today Monday, Maraga announced that the presidential campaign secretariat will operate from Kileleshwa in Nairobi. He named governance expert Mkawasi Mcharo and veteran journalist David Makali as the two key figures who will lead the campaign.
Mcharo has been appointed Co-Executive Director of the Presidential Campaign Secretariat. According to Maraga, she will oversee campaign strategy, policy development and diaspora affairs.
He described Mcharo as a governance specialist with more than two decades of leadership experience, saying she has played a significant role in advancing social justice, championing dual citizenship and supporting the establishment of Kenya’s first presidential debate.
“She will oversee strategy, policy and diaspora affairs,” Maraga said in the statement, outlining the responsibilities of her new role.
Makali, a seasoned journalist and political communications strategist, has been appointed Communications Coordinator.
Maraga said Makali brings more than 30 years of experience spanning the media and civil society sectors, adding that his expertise will guide the campaign’s public messaging as preparations for the 2027 race gather pace.
The appointments mark one of the clearest signs yet that Maraga is moving to formalise his presidential campaign structure well ahead of the next General Election.
The former Chief Justice has positioned himself as a reform-minded candidate, placing governance, accountability and constitutionalism at the centre of his political message. The announcement of his campaign secretariat is expected to form part of broader efforts to build a national campaign ahead of the 2027 contest.
