Before becoming a dominant voice on Kenyan television, Jeff Koinange lived a life far removed from studio lights and breaking news.
At just 19, he joined Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) in 1986, stepping into a fast-paced, unpredictable world that would later influence his storytelling craft.
Those early years were filled with travel, cultural exchanges, and friendships forged thousands of feet in the air, an experience that would leave a permanent mark on his life.
Reunion Rekindles Old Memories
During a recent reunion with his former Pan Am Kenya crew colleagues, Koinange revisited some of the most unforgettable, and at times unbelievable, moments from that era.
Among them was a candid and humorous memory involving his colleague Elizabeth “Betsy” Atkinson, a story that drew laughter and nostalgia in equal measure.
“My greatest memory of Betsy Atkinson was taking a shower with her,” Jeff shared, drawing gasps from the room.
“Nothing happened. But in my mind, it’s instilled in my mind how Betsy looked in the shower. I don’t know why we ended up showering together. I don’t know why,” Jeff admitted.
Betsy Tells Her Side of the Story
Betsy, recalling the same incident, offered her own vivid account of the unexpected moment, painting a picture of youthful spontaneity and confusion.
“About the shower, shall I just say it happened something like he knocked the door and I was in the shower. I was whatever happened. I opened the door. I’m like, ‘Hey, I’m showering,’ and he is like ‘No, no, no, no. It’s okay,” recalled Betsy.
“It’s okay. You’re showering. I can come.’ I was like, ‘No, I’m showering.’ ‘No, no, no. You can’t.’ I’m like, ‘No, okay, I’m in the shower.’ Then slowly the door opens and he’s like, ‘Okay, I can wash you. I can shower with you,’” she further recalled.
Despite the awkwardness, both emphasized the innocence of the moment, framing it as one of many unforgettable experiences from their time as young crew members navigating life on the road.
From Cabin Crew to Household Name
For Koinange, those Pan Am years were more than just youthful escapade but foundational to his journey. The exposure to different cultures, personalities, and real-life stories would later define his approach to journalism.
Today, Jeff Koinange stands as one of Kenya’s most respected media figures, a journey that began not in a newsroom, but in the aisles of an international airline.
The reunion served as a powerful reminder that behind every accomplished figure lies a collection of raw, unfiltered life experiences.
For Koinange, the skies of Pan Am was the beginning of a story that continues to inspire.
