Heavy rainfall has caused widespread flooding in several parts of Nairobi, leaving roads impassable, disrupting traffic and forcing emergency rescue operations across the capital.
According to reports from the Kenya Red Cross, floodwaters have affected numerous estates including Parklands, the Central Business District (CBD), Ngong Road in the Ngando area, Lower Kabete, Kibera, Kilimani, South B, Kawangware, Lang’ata, Lavington, Eastleigh and Riruta.
The heavy downpour has also led to significant traffic disruptions across major roads, compounding challenges for commuters during the morning rush. Motorists have reported gridlock and slow movement along the Nairobi Expressway near the Museum Hill exit, as well as along Limuru Road, Bunyala Road, Lusaka Road and several streets within the CBD.
Nairobi and Ngong Rivers Overflow
Authorities say the flooding has been worsened by the overflow of the Nairobi River and Ngong River, which burst their banks following sustained rainfall. The overflowing rivers triggered riverine flooding in nearby settlements, particularly in low-lying neighborhoods.
The situation has raised concerns for residents living along riverbanks and flood-prone areas, where homes and businesses risk being submerged if rainfall continues.
Kenya Red Cross Conducts Rescue Operations
Emergency response teams from the Kenya Red Cross have been deployed across affected areas to assist stranded residents.
So far, rescue teams from the organization’s Aqua Rescue unit have successfully saved 11 people who were trapped inside a marooned matatu along Bunyala Road after rising floodwaters surrounded the vehicle.
In a separate incident in Kilimani, rescuers also evacuated two children who had been trapped inside a flooded house.
Authorities have urged residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and avoid attempting to cross flooded roads or rivers, warning that water levels could continue rising if rainfall persists.
The ongoing rains highlight the recurring challenge of urban flooding in Nairobi, where drainage systems often struggle to cope with intense downpours, especially during peak rainy seasons.
Emergency teams remain on standby as weather conditions continue to be monitored.
