Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters have arrested a man accused of posting a threatening video targeting President William Ruto on TikTok.
The suspect, identified as Peter Maingi Kimani, also known as Menelik Kimani, was apprehended in the Gachage area of Kiganjo, Gatundu South Sub-County.
According to the DCI, he had gone into hiding after allegedly recording and sharing the video earlier this week.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect was “smoked out” of his hideout and is currently undergoing processing ahead of his arraignment in court.
DCI Warns Against Misuse of Social Media
In a statement, the DCI reiterated that while the Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, such rights must not be abused to infringe on the rights of others or threaten national security.
The investigative agency emphasized that it will not tolerate the irresponsible use of social media platforms, particularly where public peace and security are at risk.
“While freedom of expression is guaranteed in the Constitution, its enjoyment should not be used as a tool to promote or justify the violation of the rights of others,” the Directorate stated.
Renewed Crackdown on Online Threats
The arrest underscores growing scrutiny over online content deemed threatening or inflammatory.
Law enforcement agencies have in recent months intensified monitoring of digital platforms amid rising concerns over cyber threats, misinformation, and incitement.
The DCI further assured the public that no effort will be spared in addressing online conduct that poses a threat to peace and stability.
