Nairobi — Joyce Wanjiru Karumba, the wife of renowned gospel disc jockey Karumba Ngatia, popularly known as DJ Krowbar, has died.
In a statement released by the family, Mrs. Karumba passed away in the early hours of Monday, January 26, 2026, at 3 a.m., following a prolonged and challenging illness. She was affectionately known to family, friends, and members of the gospel community as “Joy.”
According to the statement, Joyce faced significant health complications over the past year. She underwent a kidney transplant in mid-2025 but later developed complications related to the procedure. Although an infection toward the end of the year was successfully managed, her condition deteriorated again in recent weeks. She had briefly returned home two weeks ago before being readmitted for further medical care.
The family described her as a woman of deep faith and resilience, noting that she demonstrated courage throughout her illness.
Joyce Karumba is survived by her husband, DJ Krowbar, and their three children: Toria, Riri, and Imani.
In a message shared by the family, they said they were heartbroken but drew comfort from their Christian faith.
“While we are deeply saddened by this profound loss, we find comfort knowing she is now at perfect peace,” the family said. “As we navigate this difficult time, we kindly ask for your prayers, your love, and your respect for our privacy as we gather to make arrangements for her final journey.”
The family added that details regarding funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from the public. They have appealed to both the media and the public to respect their privacy during the mourning period.
Joyce Karumba’s passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences from the gospel music fraternity and supporters, many of whom have taken to social media to offer prayers and messages of comfort to the family.
The family has indicated that those wishing to offer financial support toward funeral arrangements may do so through an M-PESA Paybill set up in her honour.
Joyce Wanjiru Karumba will be remembered for her quiet strength, devotion to family, and steadfast faith during her illness.
