CAF Opens Probe Into AFCON 2025 Final Chaos After Senegal vs Morocco Controversy

SENEGAL-MOROCCO

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially opened an investigation into the chaotic scenes that overshadowed the Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 final between Morocco and Senegal in Rabat.

In a strongly worded statement released after the match, CAF condemned what it described as “unacceptable behaviour” by some players and officials during the heated encounter.

CAF made it clear that the incidents witnessed during the final fell well below the standards expected at Africa’s biggest football event.

“The Confederation of African Football (CAF) condemns the unacceptable behaviour of some players and officials during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 Final between Morocco and Senegal in Rabat last night,” the federation said.

The continental body further stressed that misconduct directed at match officials would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

CAF Vows Stern Action

CAF reiterated its firm stance against any actions targeting referees or match organizers, particularly in high-pressure fixtures such as a continental final.

“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organizers,” the statement added.

The comments come in the wake of prolonged protests, pitch-side disorder and a temporary stoppage of play during the final following a late VAR decision.

CAF confirmed that it has begun a comprehensive review of all available match footage, including broadcast recordings and stadium surveillance, to establish individual responsibility.

“CAF is reviewing all footage and will refer the matter to competent bodies for appropriate action to be taken against those found guilty,” the federation stated.

Disciplinary measures could range from fines and suspensions to longer-term sanctions, depending on the findings of the investigation.

Final Overshadowed by Controversy

Senegal eventually went on to win the final 1-0 after extra time, courtesy of Pape Gueye’s decisive goal, but the historic triumph was partially overshadowed by the post-VAR chaos that brought the match to a halt for more than 20 minutes.

CAF’s investigation is expected to conclude in the coming days, with further communication anticipated once disciplinary bodies have reviewed the findings.
