Silent Supporter, Big Reward: DR Congo Honors AFCON Fan ‘Lumumba’ with a Jeep

He never shouted. He barely moved. Yet Michel “Lumumba” Kuka became one of the most talked-about figures of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, without touching a ball.

Now, the Democratic Republic of Congo has honoured him in an unexpected way. The government has presented Kuka with a brand-new Jeep, a public thank-you for a presence that came to symbolise Congolese pride during the tournament in Morocco.

Kuka, whose full name is Michel Kuka Mboladinga, cut a striking figure in the stands. Dressed simply, arms folded, he stood almost motionless through match after match. Cameras kept finding him. So did fans. His calm, dignified bearing and his resemblance to Patrice Emery Lumumba, the country’s independence hero, earned him a nickname that stuck.

Democratic Republic of Congo’s supporter Michel Kuka Mboladinga, pays tribute to Democratic Republic of Congo’s late prime minister Patrice Lumumba, by remaining motionless before the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) round of 16 football match between Algeria and Democratic Republic of Congo at the Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat on January 6, 2026.

DR Congo’s run at AFCON ended in disappointment. The Leopards were knocked out in the round of 16, losing 1–0 to Algeria after extra time. But Kuka’s quiet vigil did not go unnoticed.

According to reports carried by French broadcaster RMC, the Minister of Sports recognised him on Sunday, January 11. Acting on behalf of President Félix Tshisekedi, the minister praised Kuka’s contribution to the national team’s campaign and handed over the keys to a new Jeep.

Congolese journalist Yves Buya described the gesture as unusual but telling. It showed, he said, how supporters can shape the story of a tournament, even without a chant or a banner.

Kuka’s fame travelled well beyond DR Congo. Images of him circulated widely on social media, shared by fans across Africa and beyond. Tournament organisers and the Algerian Football Federation also acknowledged him. Algeria’s federation later presented him with a national team jersey bearing the name “Lumumba”, a moment that drew visible emotion from the fan.

Democratic Republic of Congo’s supporter Michel Kuka Mboladinga remains motionless before the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) round of 16 football match.

Broadcasters including France 24 and Al Jazeera noted how his silence stood out in stadiums usually defined by noise. In a competition full of colour, music and movement, Kuka offered something else: stillness.

Not everyone sees such moments the same way. Some observers caution against turning individuals into symbols too quickly, especially when deeper issues around football development and governance remain unresolved. But few dispute that Kuka’s presence struck a chord.

While the Leopards’ exit left fans nursing familiar heartbreak, one supporter ensured that Congolese colours remained visible to the final whistle and beyond. Michel “Lumumba” Kuka did not score a goal. He did not lead a chant. He simply showed up and, in doing so, became one of AFCON 2025’s lasting images.

In African football, passion often lives in the stands. This time, it drove away in a Jeep.
