As the final vote pitting him against Liz Truss is slated for September, Rishi Sunak, the product of a Kenyan father and a Tanzanian mother, is now just a step away and holds a commanding lead in the race for the coveted seat.
Sunak’s father, Yashvir Sunak, was born and raised in Kenya during the colonial era while Rishi was later born and raised in Southampton.
Though Rishi’s parents are from East Africa, his ancestral roots can be traced back to Punjab, India.
After receiving a Fulbright scholarship, Sunak, 42, graduated from Stanford and Oxford colleges.
Rishi’s dad was a general practitioner while his mother was a pharmacist who opened a drugstore.
His parents decided to send him to Winchester College, one of England’s top educational institutions.
Although he took the scholarship exam, he was unsuccessful in receiving a scholarship.
His father took on an additional job and was able to get him accepted at Winchester.
He continued on to Lincoln College in Oxford before joining Goldman Sachs, which typically only accepted 4% of applicants.
Rishi worked as an analyst for three years before joining Stanford University to complete an MBA with funding from a Fulbright grant.
It is where he met his wife Akshata, the daughter of Narayan Murthy, the sixth-richest person in India and a co-founder of Infosys.
Sunak was chosen to represent Richmond in North Yorkshire in the UK Parliament during the general election of 2015.
After winning the final vote among Conservative Party MPs on Wednesday, Sunak and Truss will now compete to become Britain’s next prime minister, kicking off the last round of the race to succeed outgoing leader Johnson.
