Former Chief Justice and 2027 presidential hopeful David Maraga has promised to form a government with 50% women representation if elected.
Maraga who is expected to fly the United Green Movement (UGM) banner, emphasized that his administration would be anchored on co-leadership between men and women at every level of governance.
“Women excel this way, men excel this way. When you put this together, you have a balanced government,” Maraga said in a video on his X page (Formerly Twitter).
The former CJ pointed out that the 2010 Constitution envisioned inclusivity through the two-thirds gender rule, which mandates that no more than two-thirds of any public body be of the same gender.
However, he lamented that successive governments had failed to fully implement this constitutional provision.
“When we did away with the old constitution and introduced the new one, there were things that were supposed to be implemented quickly. One of those is that not more than two-thirds of any gender should be in any institution,” he noted.
Maraga said his party, the UGM, had already set the tone by ensuring gender balance in its leadership structure.
“In our government, starting with our party — if it’s a chairman, you have a man and a woman. Secretary-general, you have a man and a woman. Like that, co-leadership, so that we give ladies a chance,” he explained.
The former Chief Justice’s remarks come at a time when debates around gender equality in politics and governance continue to dominate Kenya’s political scene.
As the race to 2027 heats up, Maraga’s promise of a 50-50 gender-balanced administration adds a new dimension to Kenya’s evolving political discourse.
