Ghana became the fifth African nation to qualify for the 2026 Fifa World Cup when Mohammed Kudus’ second-half goal was enough to see off recent nemesis Comoros in their final qualifier.

Accra, Ghana — Ghana have qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a 1-0 win over Comoros, becoming the fifth African nation to book a place at next year’s finals.

Mohammed Kudus scored the winning goal early in the second half, tapping in Thomas Partey’s cross to send the packed Accra Sports Stadium into celebration.

The victory means Ghana finish top of Group I with 25 points — six clear of Madagascar, who lost 4-1 to Mali in their final game.

The result marks Ghana’s return to the global stage after missing out on the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year. It also ends a difficult run against Comoros, who had beaten the Black Stars in their last two meetings.

Despite a quiet first half and missed chances from Antoine Semenyo and Jordan Ayew, Otto Addo’s side held firm to secure Ghana’s fifth World Cup appearance in the last six tournaments.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Egypt ended their Group A campaign unbeaten after a 1-0 win over Guinea-Bissau in Cairo, with left-back Mohamed Hamdy scoring early. The Pharaohs had already secured qualification after a 3-0 win against Djibouti midweek.

Burkina Faso kept their hopes alive by beating Ethiopia 2-1 at home, thanks to two goals from Pierre Landy Kabore. They now await confirmation to see if they qualify as one of the best runners-up.

Niger also strengthened their chances with a 1-0 win in Zambia to finish their Group E campaign. Both Burkina Faso and Niger must wait until the final matches on Tuesday to know if they will progress to the play-offs.

Meanwhile, Cape Verde could make history by qualifying for their first-ever World Cup if they beat Eswatini at home on Monday.

Africa’s qualification race for the expanded 2026 tournament is heating up, with four of the nine automatic spots still open..
