FIFA president Gianni Infantino has rejected growing calls for world football’s governing body to suspend Israel over the war in Gaza, saying the sport should not be expected to resolve international disputes.
Speaking after a FIFA Council meeting on Thursday, Infantino acknowledged the suffering caused by global conflicts but stressed that football’s role was limited.
“FIFA cannot solve geopolitical problems,” he said. “But it can and must promote football around the world by harnessing its unifying, educational, cultural and humanitarian values.”
The statement comes as activists and some football officials press FIFA to take action against Israel, echoing its 2022 ban on Russia following the invasion of Ukraine. At the time, FIFA and UEFA moved quickly, barring Russian clubs and national teams from competition.
Infantino, however, suggested Gaza was a different case. He emphasised football’s role in promoting peace rather than punishment. “At FIFA, we are committed to using the power of football to bring people together in a divided world,” he said. “Our thoughts are with those who are suffering in the many conflicts that exist around the world today. The most important message that football can convey right now is one of peace and unity.”
The comments highlight the growing tension between sport and politics, with football often drawn into international disputes. FIFA’s response to Gaza will likely face scrutiny in the months ahead, as critics accuse the organisation of applying double standards.
